Straw Plasters

Straw Plaster, Radiant Heat Earthen Floor

We love to make our own thick, cob-like straw plasters. Our breathable straw-bodied plasters are perfect for straw bale, historic, rehabbed, and new building projects.   Structural integrity, thermal mass, and acoustic insulation can be achieved with these striking plasters.  Straw fibers weave sturdiness and volume into the clay body, enabling sculptural detailing, rounded corners, sturdy shelves, arched doorways, and decorative niches that delight the eye and invite touch.  Straw plasters finished flatly and smoothly will still lend rich textural information to any interior.  Radiant heat warms an earthen floor to envoke the feeling of walking inside a loaf of oven fresh bread.

Imagination is the only limit when planning how these plasters can enhance your space.

Straw Clay Plasters can create built-in furniture. These meditation benches were built from the ground up with construction debris infill and clay mortar. Covered with a well worked final layer of straw clay plaster and sealed with raw linseed oil and many essential oils, they are sturdy, water resistant, and non dusting. Four benches embrace the meditation space at Allyu Studio–please enjoy free guided meditation on the first wednesday of every month at noon to experience the grounding force of this room.

Straw clay Plasters can also be sculpted to create bas-relief mural or rhythm art that is light-interactive. This tree casts a constantly changing shadow from the light that crosses the house throughout the day.

Straw Plasters have mixed media potential; here, sprigs of local reeds are inlaid into this beautiful bathroom wall’s original clay plaster.
